Kaiser Lake by Dale Adams
Kaiser Lake
He parked his truck at Kaiser Lake on a cloudless summer day
He stared out at the calm waters, as he tossed his clothes away
How they’d loved to swim this lake; they’d talked for hours beneath the trees
shared a blanket in the moonlight, in the gentle summer breeze
But now it seemed so far away, from another time and place
He couldn’t feel the sunlight, or the warm wind upon his face
There’d been no one else before her, and no other since she’d gone
A year’s passing had left him with no reason for going on
They were a quiet couple, not given to public displays
No rings or pins or necklaces, but we all knew them anyway
When we saw them walk together, they were more than just good friends
but no one could have imagined just how their young love would end
For on one cloudless summer day, Deena took a lonesome drive
and parked way out by Kaiser Lake, where she was last seen alive
No one knew what she was feeling, what was going through her mind
cause she put a pistol to her head, and left no note behind
The inquest showed she wasn’t pregnant, no signs she’d been abused
No diary found to tell a tale of nothing left to lose
It hit Randy like an avalanche, with no place to run to
All the time they’d spent together, and he’d never had a clue
At the funeral, her loved ones stared, as if he’d done the deed
There were no words he could find that might ease their heartbreaking need
He felt as though he had fallen to the bottom of a well
and he held it all inside, for there was no one left to tell
And now, four seasons later, he dove into the deep
unable to remember his last untroubled sleep
Down, until the muddy water dimmed the light of day
down, until the pain and noise began to fade away
It was not until the next day that they noticed he was gone
Yet another day to find him at the bottom, holding on
It took some time to pry him loose from the rock he held so tight
It’s said his face was peaceful when they brought him up to the light
I can hope those two young lovers found each other once again
by Kaiser Lake, in starry skies, spirits in the summer wind…..
