Why I by C.R. Daugherty
If I could narrow my writing down
To two words with which I’d like to start
Meting out a poem, pound for pound,
It’s more like seven, bless your heart.
These words are who, what, when, where, how, why, I,
And is it no surprise as I come across
With interrogative beginning a line,
Or testimony, this language be boss?
What are the words which come to your mind
As you begin a sacred poem?
Second narrative words like you’re and you,
Sound catechistic for to quote ‘em.
Beginning a line with they’re and those
Sounds like a form of storytelling.
I hope you end your poem well and close
With wittily inked grammar and saucy spelling.
